Champions are born, not made. Chuks was born a champion, with this rare trait manifesting in all spheres of his life.
We first met as freshers in Father Joe, Aguleri in 1973. He could easily be noticed a mile away in his sparkling uniform. He knew what he wanted and went for it. An all- rounder, Chuks was exceptional in academics, sports and socials.
Our friendship continued throughout our university days and we normally converged every holiday in Carosa Haven, his family hangout. Upon graduation, I got a job in Onitsha and rented a flat.
Chuks joined me a year later, having passed his Bar exams in flying colors. Here we started real life as bachelors. Chuks was extremely organised and disciplined. He would always be awake by 5 am to polish his shoes, do some ironing and itemise in writing, his itinerary for the day, hour by hour. This was a daily routine which I found strange sometimes.
Our flat was a melting point of social activities which attracted other friends that came to live with us.
A couple of years later, we decided to settle down. In an extraordinary arrangement, Chuks was to become my Best Man and I, his wedding sponsor.
Chuks relocated to Lagos but our closeness continued. Then, it happened. I got the news of his demise through a WhatsApp thread. This was perhaps the most devastating news in my entire life.
A great friend is gone. Blunt, almost to a fault, Chuks was a confidant to many. He could sacrifice anything to make anyone happy. He was easy going, amiable, hated controversies and loved the good things of life.
A Star who made profound positive impact in the lives of many, Chuks will surely be missed by family and friends.
Adieu my Bestman and friend.
